Wild Things

There’s a wild thing that exists in all of us.It lives in our passions, in the people we love, in our subconscious thoughts, our beliefs. It’s even made a home in the darkest parts of us.But we can’t be scared of it.We have to become it.From the song #WildThings by #AlessiaCara

I heard these lyrics at the end of a song recently, and I was taken back by this part. It rang loud and clear and shook me at my core. I needed this reminder after such a draining and emotional few weeks. I'm still trying to navigate this wild thing in my soul. I find myself holding back too often. I remember my 9th grade teachers words in my yearbook .."Use that voice of yours because whenever you did, everyone benefitted." I know my fears come from the same passionate place these words do and life has taught me over and over that the more you use something the better you get. All I know is there is a deep and passionate wild thing in us all and as long as we let it out from a place of love and compassion for ourselves and others, there will always be meaning to it. And what's so beautiful is we all have our different ways of using that voice. The thing that pulls us towards certain outlets and causes. I'm grateful for this moment even in all it's uncertainty. I hope it brings change through this winter season and plants the seeds for rebellion and strength to overcome what is ahead. I pray for all around the world suffering from injustice, greed and pain. I know deep down when we come together and use our voices, so much beauty can be made. It's there. We just have to use it. So that is where I'll be this year, where the wild things are.

P.S. I took these a while back but for some reason I just wanted to keep them to myself. Sometimes when I do self portraits, they become a part of a healing process for me and not necessarily something I want to share. This week I felt different and so here is a post <3

Crown Yourself

"Plant your own garden and decorate your own soul, instead of waiting for someone to bring you flowers." Veronica Shoffstall

To honor the expression of love for yourself is to honor the Creator of love. To crown yourself is not to think of yourself as better than, it is to honor the vessel that carries you. Loving yourself is a means of sustenance to your soul and without it we quickly lose sight of who we are. We are worthy and we carry a world within us as beautiful as we allow ourselves to express it. Decorate your life and water your soul garden. Your life is your canvas. The brush is there in your hands. You are love.

If you follow my posts on instagram you have seen the little blurb I wrote above. If you haven't why you no follow me?? hehe

Life has been teaching me the lesson of self love so strongly these last few months. I recently went through an accident that really created this darkness around me. It was almost tangible. It didn't feel so good. I had to go through a few months of physical therapy and still suffer from chronic neck pain due to a previous neck injury. The injury also caused me to have constant migraines..something I had not had before. I was also juggling two jobs, physical therapy three days a week and a class I was taking. Not to mention the state of the world had me completely depressed! So much senseless violence and killing in the news can really get to you. As you can imagine I was not in the best place mentally and physically. I decided after my class ended to take the next few months to focus on creating love and balance in my life again. I started working one less day at my part time job and planned on using that extra time to focus on being creative and doing things I love like dressing up and taking these pictures! I've also been taking walks outside and really retreating back into nature. I've always been very drawn to the earth, flowers and trees as it can have a healing and balancing affect on me.

This beautiful flower crown was gifted to me by a fellow blogger and style lover Tamera. She makes these stunning, stunning flower crowns and she shares them as a symbol of nurturing and owning your greatness. You can read about her Crowning Yourself mission to empower and promote self care on her blog. If you haven't checked out her inspirational blog, go go go! She has fabulous style and her posts are honest and uplifting. I'm so very very grateful she sent me this crown. Recently it has helped transform my mental state of mind.

Believe it or not this crown was sent to me last year! If you know me personally, you know I struggle with waiting for perfection to do things. It has held me back from being creative and sharing my art in many ways. Something I am committed to working on this year. so...at the time, I was struggling to piece an outfit with it. Then this week I looked at it and just started grabbing pieces from my closet and magic! It all came together! I walked down the street that evening and took these pictures. I realized the key was to not think and just do! I wrote the words at the tope of the post and shared a photo on instagram. They have been a sort of mantra for me the last few days and honestly I feel like painting it on my wall in huge letters to remind me! I will strive to honor those words and treat myself with love and kindness. Don't we all deserve that? We are beauty whether we believe it or not..we were created that way. There is nothing holding us back except ourselves from being love and expressing it through all that we do.

Thanks for stopping by and listening. I hope that you feel your greatness and own your worth by being who you are and expressing it deeply no matter what you or anyone else thinks about it!

Linking up finally with stylecrone for her hat attack!

Outfit Details:
Mostly thrifted so get out there and stop trying to buy everyone else's clothing and buy your own unique treasures that resonate with your personality and style. Thrift stores are the place to do it at! and they are great for the environment!
I found the long white overcoat in the pajama section at goodwill. It is so easy to wear and keeps you cool in the heat because it is so loose and breezy.
Tank top, mom jeans and belt were also thrifted.
The star of the show is this beautiful flower crown gifted by my fashionista friend Tamera!
Earrings were bought in Spain on my travels there many years ago.
Neck piece was gifted I think. I can't remember. Adds a touch of the southwest which I've been into lately.
Shoes are new! They are by Good Guys Don't Wear Leather and for my budget/lifestyle these were expensive and not what I'm used to spending on shoes but well worth it! I have been slowly replacing things in my closet that are not vegan or ethically made with things that are and these are a new addition. A lot of vegan shoes are not the best quality and lack originality and style, these will last me years, are well made and so very stylish. This company ticks all those boxes for me and I definitely plan to purchase from them as the need arises and if I can afford it.

My Ruby Red Slipper Sneakers! élé INSIDERS Tango Shoe Review

Whether we like it or not, what we wear on our feet is personal. It might be based on function, comfort, aesthetics or a mix, but whatever the reason it directly impacts how we feel in our day to day lives.

Sometimes fashion can pose a dilemma. I'm always trying to balance comfort and style and it is hard especially as a woman when the comfortable shoe choices are not always the most attractive. When I was sent these Tango shoes, that I call "my ruby red slipper sneakers" from élé INSIDERS I was so excited because they include many of the qualities I love when it comes to fashion. They are comfortable, aesthetically beautiful and most importantly UNIQUE! like me?! Style can be a form of expression but for me it is also equally about the transformation. The way a fashion choice can transform the way you feel is magic! So how did these shoes make me feel?

I felt bold. On this day, I wanted to play with color and pattern and wear some bright lipstick with them. Other days, I loved wearing them with basics and letting them pop. I felt I had so many options to play with which is what makes styling fun. Red is one of my favorite colors too and I wear it whenever I want to feel daring.

I also felt comfortable and centered because my feet felt good. They are made from a cozy micro suede material and with each step, you are cushioned by a layer of memory foam. I also love animals and have been trying to stay away from buying anything that is made from them and these shoes are made from all man made materials. Yay!

I felt strong and in charge. They are not called Tango for no reason ;)

I felt limitless. I clicked my heels and felt at home. I could walk with style, dance and even... fly! Yes, they have hidden wings that allow you to fly!! Well, no... pictures can be deceiving but these emotions are the real deal!

So overall I really love my slipper sneakers. I've been wearing them the last few months and have thoroughly enjoyed them. At first, I wore them mostly in the house but I very quickly transitioned them into my comfy outdoor shoes to wear to the grocery store, coffee shop or to do errands in. I also took them on a 10 hour road trip and they were ideal for that. They won't hold up in the snow or rain so please check the weather before going out in them (like with any shoes). They can also be really great as indoor shoes if you work from home or want to just lounge around with funky feet. I'm already eyeing my next pair, the Milonga booties for the colder months and to replace my uggs that I dislike because they have zero style and are made from animals :(

You can read more about these and their other dancy named shoes on their website. Their story of bringing the Argentinian house shoe to the states re-imagined is so interesting.

Would love to hear about your shoe adventures. What are your favorite shoes and why??
Much love,
Feda

P.S. Thank you to the amazing designer of these shoes Carlos Villamil for sending these my way and giving me happy feet :)

P.P.S. These were sent to me to review but all opinions are my own and I would never EVER share anything on this blog that I don't love and that do not align with who I am. XO

Winter. Spring. Blanck & White. Contrast.

“Earth teach me to forget myself as melted snow forgets its life. Earth teach me resignation as the leaves which die in the fall. Each teach me courage as the tree which stands all alone. Earth teach me regeneration as the seed which rises in the spring." William Alexander

"There are dark shadows on the earth, but its lights are stronger in the contrast.” Charles Dickens

I realized that I have been experiencing a lot of contrasts lately. It's been a long winter in Boston. We've had record snowfall with lots and lots of shoveling. I don't hate snow, I actually enjoy the seasons in New England, but it can test your patience when it's week after week of snow piling up with no place to put it. That along with some of the incredibly ugly things happening around the world had me feeling some pretty low lows. Winter blues started to take on a different tone this year and I was having trouble working through it all.

I do feel that without the bad, in contrast you can't appreciate the good. I mean without winter do you really appreciate when spring finally arrives? There is beauty in all the stages but we have to be wise enough to trust and know that it will pass. Without the lows you can't appreciate the highs and everything in between. It is a process and a cycle just like nature.

I've actually been wanting to photograph this outfit for some time. Once I got through some of the mental block that had been piling up, I mustered up the courage and just did it. It felt sooo amazing to do this little outfit post for ME. The mind can tire you out and it's important to do things that make you feel good. Things that help you to let things out and express whatever it is inside. For me it's dressing up, putting colors and textures together and creating art on my body. In those moments I can let go and play. What good are you to the world if you're constantly in a negative state of mind?

This outfit was inspired by winter and the awakening of spring. I had fun doing the makeup with this one with pops of pink and yellow. Speaking of contrast, I've been wearing a lot of black and white lately. I was excited when I found this very in trend checkered print vintage dress while thrifting! The outfit is almost all thrifted by the way besides the boots and the jewelry. This scarf is just my favorite ever and I thrifted it last year when Jean from Drossintogold came up to Boston. She gave me some lucky energy that day ;) I'm just sooo in love with the Russian/Eastern European floral prints and I'm not sure if I'll ever get over them. I did an entire editorial with them with an amazing team but it will be some time before I can share anything. The necklace was very kindly gifted to me by Alina of Zamarut Jewel and it added just the right touch of tribal energy along with the ring from Avizeh Jewelry.

My husband Anthony was kind enough to take these for me in the freezing cold. Thankful <3

Ebb and Flow. Trusting Your Intution and self expression. Update.

It has been a while since I have sat down and written a blog post. The summer has come and gone and the air and scenery is changing as all things do. I was in need of a breather this summer, needed to inhale, take in nature and feel with all my senses, which is why the blog sort of took a back seat. My friend Jean (of the amazing Drossintogold) told me recently life is full of ebb and flow, and I couldn't agree more. The only constant in life is change. I think sometimes I'm happy with my presence being more outward, through social media and blogposts and other times I need to renew inward and take a break form the internet. I think I took a little longer than I needed because I missed it and missed all of you!

What have I been up to? Lots of reading, researching/taking in knowledge, enjoying time with family and friends, the outdoors, a little bit of traveling and of course work. I did a few weddings/sessions, some I can't share because the families requested privacy and others I would love to share on the blog eventually. Hope you all enjoyed your summer and are ready to jump into fall or whatever season you are transitioning into.

One of the books I really enjoyed reading was one called Divine Intuition by Lynn Robinson.  It talks a lot about listening and trusting your intuition. Trusting the voice of love inside, trusting yourself. It infuses a lot of the follow your dream mentality, follow what you enjoy doing, follow your excitement. What is sort of divine is I picked this book up at the thrift store. It was exactly what I needed at that time.

The reading follows a workbook format where there is content and little blurbs or pages allowing you to pause and answer questions based on your life experience. One of the exercises had you imagine yourself enjoying something. What does that image look like? What are you wearing (loved that one)? What are you doing?

I pictured myself decked out in this unique ensemble. I was at an exhibit, my exhibit! Proud of work that I had put so much of myself into. Then I realized that is what I love to do. Create art, and be art both inwardly and outwardly. Self expression is like breathing to me. There's no other way for me to describe it. I notice how I feel when I'm not doing it, the build up of this uneasy feeling that I have to release. Which is what I'm feeling right now. My sister (of Dream It Up Cookies) who also has the artist bug says artists are gifted and cursed at the same time. I have to agree, it can be both a blessing and a source of anxiety. I find myself constantly trying to find a balance between that ebb and flow.

Do any of you get this overwhelming emotion to express yourself? How do you work through it? Would love to hear your stories.

I've been feeling a divine push lately and I'm ready to jump in. I have three projects I'm so excited to be working on in the next few months. I'm collaborating with Papaya! on something that is very special to me. If you haven't read my feature on artist Anahata Katkin's blog go check it out. It is one of the most beautiful things I've read about my work and I have to admit it was a revelation to me! It was really the boost of assurance I needed as I continue on this interesting path I have taken. I'm also working on an editorial with a great team of artists that will be exhibited this winter (Inshallah), and my personal ongoing project Red, White and Blue.

Hope you are all following and trusting your intuition. Go for it. Don't let the past or your negative thoughts hold you back. You are a unique expression of life. Don't let society dictate that expression. It can't be put into a box. Be aware of it, explore it, hone your craft and let it out!

Much love,
Feda

P.S. The images are double exposure using two images. Portraits of myself and images of flowers I took in the spring. I love how they turned out.

It's all about the bling!

I was recently sent this beautiful headpiece by the UK company Avizeh jewelry. I've always been in love with ethnic jewelry so you can imagine how giddy I was when I had this piece in my hands! I'm still pretty obsessed and I've had it for a few weeks now.

"Avizeh is company which is born out of the love and culture of ethnic Afghanistan. Avizeh translates jewellery in Farsi. This unique name speaks for what we cater for and the rich cultural heritage of jewellery making which dates back to thousand of years ago and at time of when great trading routes flourished through Afghanistan. These rare Jewels of the east still remain and are carefully hand crafted by a nomadic tribe called Kuchi."-from their website

The piece itself is beautifully made. It has signs of being a vintage piece, there were one or two bells missing and some stitching done on one side with the connector pieces, nothing you notice unless you inspect it up close like me :) I doesn't detract from the piece at all and I actually felt it added to its charm. I asked Avizeh about the minor imperfections and they said they rework/restore these vintage pieces, some gems are added etc.

What I really loved was that this is basically a one of kind piece. What I love about thrifting is that you're buying and putting together things that are not necessarily still in stores. This headpiece feels like a vintage treasure and I like that we all won't be clones next week! I'll definitely be picking up some more treasures from their site. I've been eying the beautiful cuffs and necklaces. The prices are great for what you are getting. Even when you convert the pound to dollar (If you're from the US and have traveled to the UK you know how expensive it can be with the pound being almost double the dollar!).

I actually had a hard time styling this! Especially with the turban. I wrapped this thing a few times and finally settled on this turban creation. I also wanted to dress it down because I think it would be hard to wear this baby out without dressing it down a bit. I decided to wear simple jeans and these flip flops I got from my trip to Nantucket I've been wanting to wear now that the weather is a bit nicer (although it is still freezing every other day here in Boston). I'm not totally sure about the red accents I added. I had painted my nails red the day before so I had to incorporate it somehow. There were little red accents on the headpiece and shoes so I thought it would fit in.

As always much love,
Feda

Reflections on Change

constantfinal

In my sophomore year of high school I randomly decided to switch high schools. For one reason or another, I felt like I didn't fit into the high school I was in. There were other superficial reasons that I would give my friends/family but deep down I felt I needed a change of scenery. It happened quickly. I didn't give it much thought. I just did it.

It was that year at my new high school that I took an art class to fill space in my schedule. I enjoyed art in middle school so I thought why not? I still remember drawing a still life of a vase with flowers. I was sketching but I wasn't very good at it. I was consumed with thoughts about how it was supposed to look. I was a bit frustrated so I asked my art teacher how to draw the petals that sort of looked like they were coming at you. They didn't curve to the side like the image in my head of a flower. She said don't THINK about what it's supposed to look like, just draw. Draw exactly what you SEE. At that moment I felt a deep connection with the flower. I didn't see it as a flower, it was shapes, lines, shadows, and shades. I was seeing it in a different light. Not for what my mind wanted it to be, but for what it was. It's essence. I felt it come alive as it was coming to life on my paper. I was tuning into something much greater than me, from one life to another.

I found out soon after I met my teacher that she was also going through her own changes. She had been the director of the art program for many years and wanted to return back to her rural roots to spend the rest of her years teaching. I was really sad that she was leaving. I had grown quite a bond with her in those few short weeks. It was through her that I first felt the power of an outlet for self expression. The power of living in the moment, and of creating from a place deep within. I learned how to express my unique colors. The power of feeling something much greater than you channeled into art.

I think I had told her, wow that's a big change, and she said to me, well the only constant thing in life is change. It was hard for me to accept but at that moment I had an awakening through her words. We don't often notice when things are changing until they actually change. Before the change there's pain, there's resistance, and clinging to the known. Why would we want to face the unknown? We hope that with change comes growth, and intuitively I think we know when we need change. Just as I knew I needed to make that switch from one school to the other. Although she moved on, her essence remained with me. I appreciated the wisdom she left with me. Looking back, the sequence of events seems to fit like a puzzle. If I had never switched schools, I would never have taken that art class, and I would never have met such an inspiring woman who would affect my life so much so that I still remember those moments so richly. That those words, I would carry with me forever.

Change is scary but when I feel it stir within me it's an emotion I can recognize now. It's an overwhelming feeling of excitement and fear all in one. If we're not changing, we're not growing. It's usually not so sudden. Change stirs within us for long periods. It causes tension, heightened emotions but ultimately it is the exact thing that needs to happen. The evolution of self.

My thoughts are scattered in this post. I'm expressing something but I'm not yet ready to talk about it in a public way. I consider this blog as a diary of photos, life, and self expression. The reality of others reading it still hasn't sunk in all the way. I'm the type that can't help but express how I feel. I like being honest. I like sharing vulnerable moments because I think it's important to be human. That is sort of what keeps me writing even when there's an audience.  I'm writing this to reflect but also in the hope that these reflections help anyone out there that is going through their own changes.

Something I've been reading to myself lately is this quote that my dear friend sent me, that her friend sent to her. (Thank you Dina and Hanan if you are reading!) I think it describes change beautifully.

Some periods of our growth are so confusing that we don’t even recognize that growth is happening. We may feel hostile or angry or weepy and hysterical, or we may feel depressed. It would never occur to us, unless we stumbled on a book or a person who explained to us, that we were in fact in the process of change, of actually becoming larger, spiritually, than we were before. Whenever we grow, we tend to feel it, as a young seed must feel the weight and inertia of the earth as it seeks to break out of its shell on its way to becoming a plant. Often the feeling is anything but pleasant. But what is most unpleasant is the not knowing what is happening. Those long periods when something inside ourselves seems to be waiting, holding its breath, unsure about what the next step should be, eventually become the periods we wait for, for it is in those periods that we realize that we are being prepared for the next phase of our life and that, in all probability, a new level of the personality is about to be revealed.”

Alice Walker, Living by the Word

How beautiful right?! When I went out to take a photo for today's post everything was covered in snow. Yes, we had more snow today. I was looking for something to signify change, something blooming. Well nothing was growing. It was all dead, except for this tree with branches that were starting to bud. Yay! Thank you tree! This tree grows the most beautiful flowers. It looks so magical in the spring. I just love this little bud recreating intself into the world. Again, how beautiful, because although life is full of struggle and change, it still remains beautiful in one form or another.

Happy change everyone.
Much love <3
